Birmingham police identified him as Rodriguez Deonte Jones. Those who knew Jones said he had two children and a third on the way.

West Precinct officers and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service were dispatched at 12:48 a.m. Wednesday to the 1300 block of McMillon Avenue in the southwest part of the city on a report of a car fire.

Once the flames were extinguished, Jones’ body was found in the passenger’s seat. An autopsy later in the day determined Jones was the victim of a homicide, but authorities have not said how he was killed.

No motive has been established and no arrests have been announced.

Jones is Birmingham’s 94th homicide of 2020. Of those, 14 have been ruled justifiable and another accidental and therefore aren’t deemed criminal. In all of Jefferson County, there have been 133 homicides including the 94 in Birmingham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
