Leslie Public Schools started an external lockdown Monday, Oct. 12, 2020, after the car of a serious assault suspect was found in town.

The car of a person suspected of a serious assault near Lansing was found in a Leslie subdivision around 10 a.m., Oct. 12, Leslie Police Chief Bob Delamarter said.

Police alerted the school because a dangerous suspect could be in the area, Delamarter said.

Leslie schools started the external lockdown around 10:30 a.m., Superintendent Jeff Manthei said. The district was still in lockdown as of 11:40 a.m.

“It’s not really any different than every day, we just called and said, ‘Make sure you’re in an external lockdown because there could be a possibility of someone on foot in the area,’” Delamarter said.

The suspect’s car was found half a mile from the closest school, so alerting the district was a precautionary measure, Delamarter said.
