Rodney Smith Jr. found himself at a loss for words after mowing the lawn of two deserving military veterans on Tuesday.

Smith is currently on his ninth lawn-mowing tour of the country, mowing 50 lawns in 50 states. In each state, the Huntsville, Alabama, native picks a group of people and surprises them by mowing their lawn for free. This year, he’s helping Gold Star families, Purple Heart recipients, POWs, and veterans.

“I believe we should honor our veterans while they’re here,” Smith told WDIV. “They have sacrificed so much for our country. It’s only right to give back while we can. This is my way of giving back, by mowing free lawns. I’m honored to be here today to mow for another veteran.”

For Smith, the founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service, mowing lawns isn’t a business, it’s a calling.

“I realize my true purpose in life is to help people,” he told WDIV.

Smith’s calling also put 330,000 miles on 2013 Ford Edge, the car that carries all of his equipment everywhere he goes.

Rodney Smith Jr. is no ordinary Alabama man. In 2015, Smith founded Raising Men Lawn Care. The organization mentors and recruits local youth to take care of lawns for elderly, disabled, single parents, and veterans in the community.

On Tuesday, Smith’s mission brought him to the home of Army veteran Jim Owens and United States Air Force veteran Gale Owens in Canton, Michigan. He had no idea that there was a surprise waiting for him.

After Smith was done mowing the couple’s lawn, Mark LaNeve, U.S. Ford Executive Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service, drove up with a brand new 2020 Edge ST-Line to replace his current 2013 Ford Edge.

“Lost for words. Wow…. @Ford came out to my lawn in MI,” wrote on Twitter alongside photos of his new ride. “After mowing my lawn, they surprised me with a brand new 2020 Ford Edge. Wow. Thank you so much @Ford.”

Ford Motor Company heard about Smith’s project and about his loyalty to his Ford Edge and looped the Owens in on their plan.

“It’s a nice way to thank him for what he’s doing,” Gale told WDIV. “He’s taking his personal time to do this.”

Congrats, Rodney and thank you for all that you do!
