Last Friday, September 25, Hyundai Motor Company shared its game-changing electrification plans driving its transformation into a Smart Mobility Solution Provider at the 16th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
At the show, the Korean car manufacturer premiered its RM20e electric racing midship sports car prototype, as well as the Elantra N TCR and Prophecy concept EV model, demonstrating just how far its EV ambitions will go. The all-new Tucson and the all-new Elantra also made their Chinese market debut at the event.
Hyundai’s RM20e is the first high-performance electric sports car developed by the brand, utilizing its industry-leading electric powertrain. Project RM (Racing Midship) started in 2012 as Hyundai embarked on a journey to develop and connect new high-performance motorsports technologies for upcoming N models. Since the project started, all RM models have undergone comprehensive and extensive road testing in order to validate newly developed technologies, evaluate their endurance and performance, and improve them for future N models.
Albert Biermann, President and Head of R&D Division of Hyundai Motor Group, announced Hyundai Motor Group’s electrification vision through a virtual presentation. “It is our responsibility to save the planet, so that future generations can thrive in a clean environment,” said President Biermann. “To achieve the goal of clean mobility, Hyundai has secured the capacity to develop all types of eco-friendly vehicles, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell electric vehicles using Hyundai’s own technologies.”
At the motor show, Hyundai is also featuring its Prophecy concept EV that captures the brand’s electrification direction. Aside from the Prophecy Concept EV, Hyundai is also promoting its recently launched IONIQ dedicated EV lineup brand that is central to its ‘Strategy 2025’ electrification roadmap.
“Hyundai is committed to the development of eco-friendly automotive technologies for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV),aiming for a range of clean mobility solutions,” Hyundai says in a statement. “Prophecy represents the direction of Hyundai’s future EV design direction, while RM20e hints at the electric-based high-performance potential of the N brand. Hyundai plans to take electrification leadership in China, the world’s biggest EV market, and work to enhance the brand’s image by offering strategic models that can provide game-changing smart technologies and transformative experiences for EV customers.”
Along with the world premiere of the RM20e, as well as the Prophecy’s debut in China, Hyundai launched another bomb in the form of the high-performance Elantra N TCR, Hyundai’s latest ‘touring car racing’ model. This particular speed demon is set to join circuit racing competitions starting next year. The Elantra N TCR is the brand’s third TCR model to vie for podium finishes, following the footsteps (or more appropriately, tire tracks) of its older brothers the Veloster N TCR in 2019 and i30 N TCR in 2013.
Aside from all the new vehicles, Hyundai also launched E2E via Hyundai Motor’s online sales system in China. Using this system, Chinese customers can purchase the brand’s best-selling Palisade SUV. Hyundai expects the online sales system to help protect consumers’ rights by offering the same product price anywhere in China and providing an easier and more convenient shopping experience.
At the car show, Hyundai also brings focus to the company’s hydrogen fuel cell technology, calling attention to one of China’s biggest problems: air pollution. Hyundai is the first company in the world to mass-produce FCEVs using its own industry-leading technologies. Hyundai’s NEXO SUV and XCIENT Fuel Cell truck have rolled out successfully to markets and the brand is continuing to expand its fuel cell stack production capacity. Hyundai plans to introduce NEXO to pilot drive in China in 2021, aligning perfectly with the Chinese government’s ‘New Energy Vehicle Policy’.
