Man killed after being hit, thrown from bicycle in Charlotte crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A man riding a bicycle was hit and killed in a crash in southwest Charlotte early Monday morning.

The wreck happened around 5 a.m. on Sam Wilson Road near Moores Chapel Road. Medic says one person was pronounced dead on scene.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers responded in reference to a crash involving an SUV and a bicycle. When police arrived, they found the SUV, which had crashed into the back of a bicycle.

Officers also found the man who was riding the bicycle in the road.

According to CMPD, a preliminary investigation indicated the SUV was headed south on Sam Wilson Road from Moores Chapel Road towards I-85. Police say the man on the bicycle was also headed south on Sam Wilson Road.

The SUV crashed into the back of the bicycle, throwing the man several feet in the air and landing on the road.

The Charlotte Fire Department and Medic responded to the scene where the man, identified as 34-year-old Johnny Wayne McKinney, was pronounced dead.

According to CMPD, this section of Sam Wilson Road is dark with no street lights, and McKinney was not wearing any reflective clothing or a helmet.

Police say the SUV driver was wearing her seatbelt and suffered no injuries. The driver was also screened for impairment, and did not show signs of impairment.

Police say operating a bicycle at night without lights and not wearing reflective gear are contributing factors in this crash. Excessive speed is not suspected to be a contributing factor for the SUV, CMPD says..

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
