Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard enters the car dealership game

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard has partnered with Brian Sanders to open Damian Lillard Toyota in McMinnville.

While Lillard having his name attached to a car dealership is certainly notable, the hook here is that the business seeks to reinvent the car buying experience.

The site, referred to as the “Lillard Toyota Campus,” features more than just motorized vehicles. There’s a ping pong table, several pop-a-shot hoops, and black and red decorated donuts representing Lillard’s jersey number.

“The goal was to make a car dealership that didn’t feel like a car dealership,” Sanders said.

Sanders and Lillard met during his rookie season (2012-2013) and have been friends ever since. Sanders, formerly the general manager at Dick Hannah Toyota, said he and Lillard wanted to create an environment where people wanted to hang out even if they weren’t seeking to buy a car.

During the planning process, Lillard, according to Sanders, recalled going to car dealerships with his parents and being bored to tears waiting for a deal to be struck. He wanted this dealership to be kid-friendly and inviting for members of the community to swing through, look around, hang out, eat a donut, pop some baskets and maybe, just maybe, meet Lillard should he happen to be on site.

As an added touch, the employee uniform includes a pair of Lillard’s shoes made by Adidas.

Lillard announced the opening of the dealership on Thursday through his Instagram page.
