It’s been a while since Steve Montelongo found himself in a position to save a life, but he was in the right place at the right time Thursday morning.

He was driving home from taking granddaughter Monic Cordova to an appointment when she told him she spotted a car in the irrigation canal at Hatch and Crows Landing roads.

He immediately pulled into the nearest parking lot and started to get out when she said to him, “Where are you going?”

He jokingly replied, “I’m a hero, you know,” a reference to when Montelongo was awarded a medal from the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission in

UPDATED at 7 a.m. Wednesday with name of boy who died and additional details from fire official

EDWARDSVILLE — A 14-year-old boy was killed and a 16-year-old boy was injured early Tuesday after two vehicles being chased by police ran off a highway and one submerged in a drainage canal at Interstate 270 and Interstate 255, authorities said.

Wood River police identified the boy who died as Harry Linnen Jr., 14, of St. Louis. Police did not identify the 16-year-old boy who was injured.

Harry drowned after trying to swim away from the vehicle that went into water, and a police officer tried to help but couldn’t get to him, authorities said.

EDWARDSVILLE — One person was killed and another was seriously injured early Tuesday after two vehicles being chased by police ran off a highway and one submerged in a drainage canal at Interstate 270 and Interstate 255, authorities said.

The two vehicles were among several that police had chased after a break-in at a Wood River car dealership on Edwardsville Road around 1 a.m. Illinois State Police said four of the vehicles were stolen from the dealership and that a fifth vehicle with the suspects had been stolen in a separate incident. 

State police said officers from Roxana were in pursuit of the vehicles speeding south on I-255.
