Brunswick council discusses recent rash of car thefts

BRUNSWICK, Ohio — In his report to City Council during the Oct. 12 regular council meeting, City Manager Carl DeForest gave an update on a rash of car thefts throughout Ohio in recent weeks, including nine in the past five weeks in Brunswick.

“Investigators think it is a coordinated effort of gangs in Cleveland, Akron and Columbus,” DeForest said. “Three (of the recent thefts in Brunswick) happened over the weekend of Sept. 11, and in three cases they (the cars) had the windows open and the keys in the ignition.”

DeForest said common-sense precautions, such as locking vehicles and not leaving valuables in sight inside the car, are often the best defense.

“And if you see anything suspicious, call police at 330-225-9111 and give as much of a description as possible,” he said.
