PM, Ford announce COVID-19 job boost with auto investment

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Doug Ford announced contributions part of a $1.8 billion investment into car manufacturer Ford’s Oakville Assembly Complex, in order to make it a global hub for battery electric vehicle production.

GM, Ford Need Electric-Car Batteries, but Take Different Paths to Get Them

Auto makers, pumping billions of dollars into developing electric cars, are now facing a critical choice: get more involved with manufacturing the core batteries or buy them from others.

Batteries are one of an electric vehicle’s most expensive components, accounting for between a quarter and a third of the car’s value. Driving down their cost is key to profitability, executives say.

But whereas the internal combustion engine traditionally has been engineered and built by auto makers themselves, battery production for electric cars is dominated by Asian electronics and chemical firms, such as

Until a few weeks ago, life looked very good for Trevor Milton. His zero-emissions truck company, Nikola, went public in June and put the 38-year-old on the Forbes 400 Billionaires list with a net worth of $5.5 billion. In September, Nikola announced a deal with General Motors that came with a stock price surge and a hefty dose of credibility.

But then, short-seller Hindenburg Research published a lengthy report calling Nikola an “intricate fraud” and accusing Milton of “numerous lies.” A bit more than a week later, Milton resigned as Nikola’s executive chairman and abandoned his seat on its board.
