York City police were trying to arrest a man for driving under the influence Thursday night when he took off with an officer hanging onto the driver’s side door, police said in charging documents.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, police pulled over 27-year-old Tyler J. Sipe, of York, around 11:17 p.m. near Kings Mill Road and Lafayette Street because he didn’t have his headlights on.
The officer soon discovered Sipe’s license was suspended for driving under the influence, the affidavit said. Police said this was Sipe’s third time driving with a suspended license.
Police told Sipe he was under arrest and opened the driver’s side door to take him into custody when he started to drive away, according to the affidavit. The officer was forced to hold onto the inside of the driver’s door for a short distance until it was safe to let go, the affidavit said.
