West Orange Schools See More COVID-19 Cases; Transportation Down

WEST ORANGE, NJ — The West Orange Public School District has seen more cases of the coronavirus among its staff and students, officials reported Monday.

Superintendent Scott Cascone issued a social media notification to the school community on Sunday with a COVID-19 bulletin. He wrote:

“This notice is to inform you that the district was notified today that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the district’s transportation department. Pursuant to the recommendations of the local public health and medical authorities, transportation services will need to be shut down on Monday, October 12 and Tuesday, October 13. Classrooms remain safe for the return of students. LESLIE, MI – Leslie Public Schools are in an external lockdown Monday because of a possible threat.

The car of a person suspected of a serious assault near Lansing was found in a Leslie subdivision around 10 a.m., Oct. 12, Leslie Police Chief Bob Delamarter said.

Police alerted the school because a dangerous suspect could be in the area, Delamarter said.

Leslie schools started the external lockdown around 10:30 a.m., Superintendent Jeff Manthei said. The district was still in lockdown as of 11:40 a.m.

“It’s not really any different than every day, we just called and said, ‘Make sure you’re in an external lockdown because there could be a possibility of someone on foot in the area,’” Delamarter said.

Police: Prospect schools on lockdown after stolen vehicle crash

PROSPECT — Schools in the area of a crash involving a stolen vehicle have been put into lockdown as a precaution Thursday morning, according to state police.

Connecticut State Police troopers are in the area of Route 69 and Radio Tower Road, investigating the crash.

“As a precautionary measure, schools in the area have been placed on lockdown,” state police said shortly before 10 a.m.

With public schools shifted to remote learning, Catholic schools in Massachusetts left without school bus transportation

When Massachusetts’ largest school districts shifted to fully remote learning for the start of the 2020-2021 school year, the decision left some parents longing for the sight of a yellow school bus rolling down their street.

Parents from Catholic schools in Springfield reached out to MassLive asking what happened to the buses.

The Diocese of Springfield contracts with the Springfield Public Schools to utilize its bus system.

Springfield Public Schools Chief Communications Officer Azell Cavaan told MassLive it comes down to the public-private schools’ contract, which mandates equal busing services for the districts.

So, when students at the public school aren’t using buses because they’re fully remote, the private school students don’t use them either.
