Decorated Marine relieved of command after deadly sinking of assault vehicle off San Clemente Island

CAMP PENDLETON — The decorated leader of a Camp Pendleton-based landing team was relieved of command on Tuesday after an amphibious assault vehicle sank off San Clemente Island, killing eight Marines and a sailor, military officials announced.

Lt. Col. Michael J. Regner was relieved of command based on “a substantial amount of information and data,” according to a statement by Lt. Gen. Karsten S. Heckl, the commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

Overturned vehicle prompts Route 8 closure in Bridgeport


BRIDGEPORT — An overturned vehicle prompted first responders to shut down a stretch of Route 8 Wednesday morning.

Police, fire units and medics were dispatched to Route 8 south between exits 5 and 3 around 4 a.m. for a reported crash, according to the state Department of Transportation

Arriving units found an overturned vehicle and shut down the left and center lanes to investigate.

LPD searches for man video recorded assaulting, forcing woman into a vehicle

Laredo police officers are looking for a man who was recorded beating, dragging and forcing a woman into a vehicle, authorities said on Tuesday afternoon.

Police officers were dispatched at about 2 a.m. Tuesday to an assault report in the intersection of Ejido and Laredo Street. A gray pickup pulled over on the side of the road. Then, a man exited the vehicle and began viciously attacking a female passenger.

Surveillance footage from the area recorded the man parking the pickup, possibly a Dodge Ram, and exiting the vehicle. He then opens the passenger door behind the driver side and strikes the female passenger four times.

“The male suspect then yanks the victim out from the backseat and throws her down onto the floor. Once on the floor, the male suspect is seen dragging the victim from her hair as he continues to strike and kick the victim,” police said

  • The Marine Corps has decided to fire the commander of the unit involved in an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) accident that left nine service members dead in July, the Marine Corps said in a press statement Tuesday evening.
